Ford paid 3.00 billion ($2.92 billion) to buy the Land Rover unit of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG's floundering Rover Group Ltd. during 2000. It also acquired the Volvo Car unit from AB Volvo (VOLVY) during the same period. It followed the late 1997 sale of Ford's heavy-duty commercial truck-making assets to DaimlerChrysler AG's (DCX) Freightliner LLC unit. The Ford-DaimlerChrysler deal precludes Ford from re-entering the heavy truck business in North America before March 2007.
