MACK TRUCKS INC--A leading producer of heavy-duty vocational-type trucks, and major maker of diesel engines and transmissions. The firm also markets a line of medium-duty diesel trucks throughout North America. MACKŪ vehicles are sold and serviced in more than 65 countries.

Mack has been wholly-owned by AB Volvo (VOLVY) of Sweden since January 2001, when Renault S.A. of France swapped its entire commercial truck business to for a 20 per cent equity stake in Volvo.

In a bid to consolidate costs, Mack plans to permanently end production of over-the-highway Class 8 trucks later in 2002 at a site in Winnsboro, S.C. Vehicle production will shift to a Volvo Trucks North America Inc. facility in Dublin, Va., amid reports that four vehicular platforms (two each at Mack and VTNA) will be consolidated by 50 per cent.

Reports indicate Mack's Macungie, Pa., truck-making facility will be used as a sole source for vocational-type Class 8 trucks and VTNA's Dublin truck-making plant will be utilized as the sole source for over-the-highway Class 8 trucks sold by parent Volvo in North America.

VTNA's Dublin truck assembly complex, currently capacitized to build 50,000 units annually, eventually may become the sole source for vocational and over-the-highway, Mack and Volvo-branded vehicles that are sold in North America.
